All-Female Eastside Bike Crew

Step aside, boys, there's a new biking group in town, and they want you to know they "don't need no fucking balls."LA Streetsblog has a profile of the fierce women who make up this new Eastside-based biking brigade called the Ovarian-Psycos.The riders clearly have more than biking on their minds: Their leaders are referred to as left and right ovaries. Meeting organizers are called "clit checkers." They sport stickers with the slogan: “Ovaries so big, we don’t need no fucking balls.” Their monthly e-bikes rides are called "Luna Rides." Their 2-year anniversary coming up in July will be titled "Clitoral Mass."The group might not be taken as seriously by other (mostly male) biking groups, but that's kind of beside the point: the group is as much dedicated to creating a safe space for women on the streets as it is to biking for the hell of it. The group is close-knit and they discuss domestic violence. Streetsblog recounts how one of their monthly rides turned into a protest after Lincoln Heights resident Bree'Anna Guzman was discovered on the side of a freeway. During the protest, the riders chanted "Whose Streets? Our Streets."Ovarian-Psycos sounds a little like Midnight Ridazz, Slutwalk and Occupy Wall Street all rolled into one. For the full profile of how the group came to be and photos, check out the full post over at Streetsblog. http://www.freyebikes.com/

The next summit is scheduled announcement of beer

One of the best things Summit Brewing has done in a long time just keeps getting better. The St. Paul brewery's Unchained Beer series continues with next week's release of Black Ale. The dark, hoppy ale is the eighth entry into the popular series.

For each Unchained installment, Summit gives one of its brewers free rein to create any beer style they want. The result is a small batch release (many of which have wowed local beer fans). Black Ale is brewer Mike Lundell second entry into the series, following his India Style Rye Ale. This time he's cooked up something perfect for the Halloween season. Here's Summit's description of Black Ale: "A medium-bodied brew, the Black Ale evokes citrus, passion fruit and peppery notes inspired by exotic hops from Australia and New Zealand.

The addition of Cara Wheat gives the beer a nice caramel, toasted flavor, and provides contrast to the darker Carafa III Special and Midnight Wheat malt varieties. It’s also dry-hopped with Galaxy and Pacific Jade for extra aroma." The brew will be available on tap at area bars starting the week of Oct. 24 and then in bottles the week of Nov. 7.

There are several events surrounding the release of Black Ale. here's a look: • Noon Oct. 24: Black Ale release party at Muddy Waters.• 6 p.m. Oct. 26: Beer School at the Republic.• 6 p.m. Nov. 2: Urban Eatery Beer Dinner.• 7-9 p.m. Nov. 3: The Nook “Burgers, Bowling, and Beer” event. http://www.chinabeerbrewing.com/

Electric bike retailer gone

This is one of the electric bikes that PHEW sells. (Photo by PHEW)

I was shocked today to see that the Philadelphia Electric Wheels store at 550 Carpenter Lane is closed. Yes, There are no more bikes in there. On the side window it says a new store will open February 15, 2011.

On Nov 19, here is message on the PHEW website.
Thanks to everyone for a great first year. We’ve enjoyed the trust & support from the neighborhood as we got our feet wet this past year selling & servicing bicycles. Anthony has moved on, and Afshin is settling into servicing your bikes himself.
In planning our spring season, which should include new non-electric bikes and more bike repairs, we find that we’ll need more space and are planning to move to another Mt Airy location over the winter. Have ideas for products we should carry? Or the perfect site for our new store? We want to know! This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
Operating on reduced winter hours, we’re now open 3 days a week and by appointment. Please call 215.821.9266 before heading over.

Jia Bao Electric Bikes Features

In a systematic energy flow comparison, a grid-charged battery driving an electric motor will provide mechanical energy about ten times more efficiently than a human eating a typical US diet. For personal travel between 5 and 30 miles per day, the electric bicycle offers the lowest environmental and personal monetary cost, usually without increasing urban travel time" From Energy,Global Warming, and Electric Bicycles Energy Flow Analysis with an Emphasis on Personal Transportation1. Hill ClimbingThat may sound obvious, but it's the primary advantage. A good electric bike effectively flattens hills, increasing your average speed and eliminating the 'groan' factor when a gradient comes into view. Provided you supply a reasonable amount of effort, you can expect to climb hills of 1 in 10 (10%) on an electric bike with ease, and clear a maximum gradient of 1 in 7 (14%), or much more. In hilly country, the effect is nothing short of miraculous. 2. SafetyIt sounds unlikely, doesn't it? But the mathematics is compelling. Think of a steep and busy road, with cars climbing at 30mph. If you previously slogged up the hill at 6mph, but can tackle the same gradient at 12mph with an electric bike, you will see 33% fewer cars, and they will pass you at 18mph rather than 24mph. Or at least, we think that's correct. Whatever the figures, there's no doubt that an electric bike helps to keep you out of danger. The same general principle applies to road junctions - the faster your acceleration, the sooner you can get out of trouble. And with no need to rush the hills, you won't be tempted to ride downhill at breakneck speed... another useful safety feature.3. Personal FitnessSurely a conventional bike will keep you fitter? That, of course, depends how much - if at all - you use it. Research (b) has found that 46% of conventional bikes are used only once or twice a week, with a further 30% being used once a fortnight or even less. By contrast, a recent survey of electric bicycle owners reveals that a third ride their bike at least once a day and 81% use the bike at least once a week (c). The figures confirm our experience that an electric bike typically gets used at least twice as often as a conventional machine...

Are electric bikes allowed on Burke-Gilman?

Q: Can electric-powered or electric-assisted bicycles ride on the Burke-Gilman Trail?
A: No, city officials say.
They're not allowed because the Burke-Gilman Trail is intended for people-powered transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation Department spokeswoman Dewey Potter said.
"It is a rule and not a law, and there is some expectation that people will respect their fellow pedestrians and cyclists," she said.
Motorized foot scooters also are not allowed in bicycle lanes or on park pathways intended for recreation, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation. That includes the Burke-Gilman Trail.
Someone busted for riding an electric-powered scooter on some public trails would likely get a $124 ticket for violating a Washington Administrative Code.
WAC states people are prohibited from driving bicycles, motorbikes and motorcycles on department of natural resources developed recreation sites - unless such trails are posted for vehicular traffic.
But responses from city officials show this doesn't appear to be a common problem.
A Seattle police spokesman said officers don't patrol the Burke-Gilman trail for electric-powered scooter riders and was not sure what the specific penalty would be.
But officers would respond if called to a complaint, he said.
Spokespeople for the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department and the Department of Transportation said their departments don't patrol the trail and weren't sure of the specific penalty.
Seattle Municipal Code 11.46.010 states that "electric motorized foot scooters may be operated on roadways, shoulders, sidewalks, and alleys, but not on bicycle lanes, or public paths."
Same goes for Segway devices.
According to city law, a motorized foot scooter is defined as "a device with no more than two ten-inch or smaller diameter wheels that has handlebars, is designed to be stood or sat upon by the operator, and is powered by an internal combustion engine or electric motor that is capable of propelling the device with or without human propulsion."
